The reasons for abolishing zoos

Zoos can be found in every country of the world and are and have been a source of entertainment and education for people of all ages. However, there is a movement to abolish zoos and there are several reasons:

Limited Living Areas

No matter how large a zoo is, it is always limited for the animals, especially the larger animals, such as giraffes, elephants, hippos, lions, and tigers. Their natural habitat is usually vast areas of forests and savannahs. Another important aspect is that zoos cannot provide a natural environment conducive for breeding.

Culling

There are a number of species within the zoo that need to be euthanized because of over- population or overcrowding. Zoo operators cannot accommodate great numbers of all animals and the larger animals need more room than is available. It is sometimes possible for some animals to be sold to other zoos but this can be a very expensive proposition.

Conservation?

Zoos often use the excuse that they are providing conservation of endangered species. However, it is incredibly difficult to provide the environment necessary for breeding endangered species. Most zoos are on a limited budget and cannot afford to provide the specialized care that is needed.

Abnormal or artificial behaviour

Artificial environment for the animals is all that zoos can provide. Some animals learn to adapt to all the changes while some animals don’t bear these changes and suffer as a result, such a depression, over-anxiety, and aggression.
